Lingerman,

Whenever a dog has swelling in the face or mouth area it is usually an allergic reaction to food, insects (bees, wasps), or some other product she came in contact with (pesticides).

Facial swelling is especially dangerous because it can restrict her breathing. Is she breathing ok? I'm thinking bees or wasps, because the face and paws are swollen ( she would have tried to swat and wipe with her paws), or a product she stepped in and tried to wipe or lick off.

You can use benadryl as an antihistamine, 1 mg per lb of dog given every 8-12 hours as needed. I would call your vet to double check, and if she has any trouble breathing at all take her to emergency vet.

I hope this helps, if you have any further questions, feel free to ask, it costs nothing to click reply. If this has helped, please remember to click the green accept button.

Warmly,

Chase

Reply to Chase's Post: She is breathing fine right now.
She has been having problems for about
one hour. How much longer can I expect
this to last? I will give her some
Benadryl, I do have some on hand.
Thank you for your help,

She has also been very thirsty, does this
surprise you?

Once you give her the Benadryl, you should see an improvement in about 20 - 30 min.
