Question

diahhrea on meds goes away then comes back

Sent to Pet Experts July 25, 2006 1:34 a.m.

My cat's diahhrea goes away while on Metronadizole, but comes right back after I stop giving it to him. Is it reasonable to conclude that the cause of the problem is probably some kind of infection or parasite? His blood work is normal except for his having hyperthyroid condition, which I have been giving him daily medication for. He had the diahhrea before he had the blood work done and was put on thyroid medication.

Actually, you might try keeping him on the metronadizole for a longer period of time. Many parasitical problems such as giardia or camphylobacter are resistant to antibiotic therapy and can require as much as 3 weeks of constant treatment to completely irradicate. If you are doing 10-14 day treatments, talk to your vet about a long term program for at LEAST 21 days to see if this takes care of the problem permanently. Given the fact he has normal stool while on the medication, it leads on to suspect that the treatment is correct.
