Question

Heart beat in Dachsund

Sent to Pet Experts October 22, 2004 11:02 a.m.

My miniature dachsund’s (7 mos old) heart beats extremely hard at times, whether at rest or at play...you can "see" it beat not just feel it. Is this normal, or a symptom of heart disease?
She acts perfectly normal otherwise.

REPLIED Check Mark

With young dogs and especially small one they don't have deep chests and there not chubby yet so it is not uncommon to be able to feel and see their heart.
To be able to know if there is a problem, a vet will need to listen to her heart. Sometimes there are murmurs present that can be felt as well.
If you just had her in and they say she is normal, than what you are seeing is normal.
Good Luck,

Response to DanaDVM's Post: Actually, she is pretty chubby for her size & age...even though she doesn't eat an extreme amount of food.

Also, the extremely "hard" heartbeat only happens occasionally & usually lasts from 5 to maybe 15 minutes.

ACCEPTED Check Mark

Okay,
If you don't feel the "hard" heartbeat is associated with activity, you need to get it checked.
Even if the heart "sounds" okay, you may want to request an ECG to have evaluated and possible chest xrays. The rhythm strip can show if there are irregularities and the xray can show physical changes as far as size, in the heart.
Hope this helps.
