Distemper from vaccine

Sent to Pet Experts July 20 2006 at 9:18 PM

I believe my 10 yr. old Borzoi has contracted distemper from a vaccine administered by my vet two weeks ago. He has gone through a period of decreased activity to none, good appetite to none, has a come and go fever as high as 105 and his hind legs are giving him trouble (ran full bore three weeks ago, ten days after the vaccination can barely rise without pain.) Weight loss from 113 to 109 in two weeks.

My vet has prescribed Rymidil (sp?) and an anitbiotic. Fever has subsided but little improvement in motor function, less vocal pain though. Appetite has returned.

What test can be performed to verify or debunk my suspicions?

Dear friend,

if you dog was vaccinated with live vaccine - yes - he can develope neuro distemper - usually 10 to 21 days later. A blood tets will sow the presenseof Inclusion bodies if he is infected with this disease. You can read about it here;

http://www.marvistavet.com/html/body_canine_distemper.html

An adverse reaction to this and any vacccine is also possible that can cause various symptoms.

Please let me know how your boy is feeling and if you have any more questions. I am happy to help in any way possible.

Very sincerely,

Terri
