We are working on a 4-H project for my 10 year old daughter. We need to find out what diseases are a horse vacinated for, what are the vaccine's called and how often are they vacinated?

Hi! This is what we in general at my barn have the horses vaccinated for. This is not all inclusive, but depending on the Vet, is what is recommended. Subject to change. Rabies, Strangles, E. Influenza, Tetanus, Viral Respiratory, Encephalomyelitis, Rhinopheumonitis, Potomac Virus Fever and now West Nile Virus. This is subject to the Vet's discretion and where the horses are shipped in from or not. That is another issue. This is a very general list. Often areas of the Country will have other problems that are NOT common to every area. This we why we have a barn manager that works closely with the Vet and changes are made accordingly to time of the year and season.
Only recently has Lyme's become an issue and some others. We work closely with the Vet's and use their expertize in treatment and suggestions. We do not pretend to know better.

This really didn't answer my question. I needed to Know what shots are given, What the shot is for each disease and when / how / and how often are the shots given. I was hoping for an answer from an equine vet.

Thanks for helping your 4-Her understand equine wellness care.
Here are some excellent guidelines established by the American Association of Equine Practitioners. These links will take you to the information you need including vaccines available, what the diseases are and vaccination schedules for different situations such as young horses, pregnant mares, etc.

The articles provide all the details you should need but if you have more questions or need more detail on a particular vaccination please ask.
