Hello and thanks for your persistence in researching this important question!

I am sending you a link to a product that is very good for fungal(yeast)-and-bacterial-combination infections on the skin. You will need to be careful to not get it into her mouth, but it is the best thing I have found for this type of problem, and is easier to control than shampoos:

http://www.americanvetsupply.com/i_019DVM01-60_Malaseb+Pledgets+60+Pledgets.php

You may find that using the shampoo form of the Malaseb on her whole body monthly may help better control this problem over time, as yeast infections of the skin can become generalized over the whole body.

Read the instructions carefully and use this wipe as directed...after meals or exercise is best to remove food residue and saliva from panting. Give attention to the folds of skin, where the moisture is high and the microbes will concentrate.

Change any plastic or ceramic food and water dishes to stainless steel...wash her dishes at least once every day to keep them completely clean. Avoid canned foods, if possible.

Keep this skin otherwise as dry and hair-free as you can. You may need to consult a local groomer for advice about how to deal with her fur at home, especially keeping the ear feathers from covering her face and holding in moisture and heat.

Atopica is a veterinary-labelled cyclosporine treatment...it is used to treat generalized allegic conditions in dogs. It works by suppressing the immune system, and thus suppressing the immune system's overreaction to things like foods, pollen, mold, etc. Using Atopica can increase the skin's susceptibility to yeast and bacteria because the immune system is limited in how it can respond.

Occasionally, when the skin is chronically irritated, bacteria and yeast organisms can invade the deeper skin layers. Bacterial infection would require an antibiotic therapy that your vet can prescribe. Deep fungal infections require oral antifungal medications in addition to the topical washing.

***You should call your vet's office to find out what they recommend for antibiotic or oral antifungal therapy at this time.***
