I am requesting Terri Riba answer the question. Hi Terri, Ivy is still not eating, she ate only about a tablespoon of low residue when I brought her home yesterday, after which I gave here the Panacur. She has been drinking a good amount of water.I picked up the Metonidazole and gave her first dose this afternoon.. Because she hasn't eaten I haven't given her Panacur today. Should I force feed her again, if so how much?. Then give here the panacur. I thought maybe I should force feed her but crush an 1/8 of a tablet of pepcid ac and put that in with it, what do you suggest? I am concerned, I don't think I can afford another subcanteous shot.

Optional Information:
Age: <1; Female; Breed: Siamese

The vet gave me eukanuba low residue and high calorie. She said have her eat the low residue unless she won't eat it, then give the high calorie. She vomited this morning after drinking water. Still has diarehea but no blood, more of a chocolate milk shake consistency. I gave here a 50ml dose of metronidazole at 1:30 this afternoon and I am supposed to continue every 12 hours for 5 days with or without food. The vet said she must eat before giving panacur but continue for 3 consecutive days. I have canned Iams kitten chicken entree and dry Iams kitten food, which I ground and mixed with water to force feed her with on Sunday night.I also have the pedialyte in the fridge from Sunday night. The vet also said to give her an 1/8 of a tablet of pepcid ac twice a day for upset stomach.

Dear friend,

Discontinue the panacur. Although it does treat giardia it can cause vomiting and diarrhea and is much too strong for Ivy in her weakened condition.

The flagyl (metronidazole)will stop the diarrhea and treat the giardia.get rid of all dry cat food and the low residue. Water down the canned cat food to a gruel and give Ivy one dropper every 15 minutes for two hours.Warm the pedialyte to room temp - do not give it cold - or put a pinch of salt and sugar in a glass of water and give Ivy one dropper every 10 minutes for one hour.

What is she taking the Panacur for? Worms? Gardia? Other?

I do not like the way this baby's system is being overloaded with meds so i would certainly not give her pepsid either. just get started with the food any hydrating instructions and let me know what is happening - I will be here a while.

I will stand by to hear from you.

Terri

She gave me Panacur and told me it's second way of attacking gardia. She also gave me 3 doses of Panacur for Wrigley(12 week old balinese) as prevention. I have given that to him yesterday/today and he shows no ill effects. I also cleaned litter box, pet fountain, and dry food bowl with 3 to 1 water/bleach solution and do so every 2-3 days per the vet. I would assume it's okay to leave dry food out considering she hasn't attempted to eat it anyway. Wrigley eats regularly from the dry food gravity feeder. I have given both kittens purified drink watering since I got them. Tap water is not tolerable around Phoenix so I give them what I drink. After giving Ivy two force feedings she went to pet fountain and drank. Should I still force feed pedialyte?

Thanks,

Dear Rob,

If Ivy begins drinking on her own - you can discontinue the pedialyte however, continue with the forced cat food until she will lick up the gruel herself -- you can leave the dry out and if Ivy wishes to eat it - she may. However, do not depend on her to eat the ow residue food if she does not care for it. Right now it is more important to get nutrition into her then to concentrate on a specific food. I would treat with the flagyl and hold up on the Panacur as that could be what made Ivy sick as one of the side effects is vomiting and darrhea. Wrigley may not be sensitive to it or be a stronger cat.

Keep me updated.

Terri

Terri, Ivy seems to be improving, she's walking around a little more. If she continues not to eat and only drink, how often should I force feed her? I just gave 2nd dose of flagyl. The vet told me to hold her mouth open, put tip in corner of her mouth, then push plunger. I do this but some seems to drip out the sides of her mouth, am I doing something wrong or is this normal? suggestions?

Thanks,

Hi Rob,

If Ivy does not eat on her own - feed her with the dropper every two hours so you keep nutrition in her system. Also use the pedialyte so she does not become dehydrated.

Please let me know what is going on with her.

Terri

Terri, woke up this morning to the sight of Ivy chowing down at her dry food bowl. She looks a lot better and sat on my lap like normal. I still have to keep her and Wrigley seperated because he keeps tackling her to play and she's not ready yet. Otherwise, she's improved a 100%. I checked the litter box and she hasn't gone yet this morning. No vomiting. I believe she's out of the woods.

Thanks,

Terri, gave her dose of fagyl an hour ago, she's eating again and drinking. I can't thank you enough again. I wish I could give more than $5 but I'm a student and the $200 vet bill drained my checking acct, it's ramen and mac & cheese for the rest of the month. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, I can't say it enough.

Extremely grateful,

                    Rob
