Our Siberian Husky recently started diccing her left ear, we looked and seen some drainage where she has been digging it. Do you think it might be from a bite or something got in there when she was snooping around in some bushs. . Do you think we could treat it with anti biotic creams ortake her to a vet>
Thank You

You can treat the wound she is scratching by cleaning it and applying a topical antibiotic for a couple of days. The problem is we need to find out why she is digging at her ear. The usual culprit is an ear infection created by either bacteria or yeast inside the ear. This is very itchy and if you look in the ear you may see dark colored material, oozing, a very red and inflammed ear. Sometimes they scratch their ears just because of inflammation alone and they would be really red and possibly swollen inside. This is either the start of an infection or a result of allergies. Ear infections are very difficult to clear up at home. The ears may need to be flushed thoroughly and ear medications like antibiotics may need to be used. The vet will also need to determine which organism is causing the infection whether it be yeast or bacteria, to prescribe the proper medications, he can do this by looking at the material under a microscope. The problem you may end up running into right now is you may have a very hard time getting her to stop scratching at her ear, scratching and rubbing will create more and more irritation. She could in turn develop a moist dermatitis, otherwise known as a hotspot. This is a very inflammed area that is very red and oozing. The area of hair will need to be clipped off to allow air to access it, oral antibiotics will be needed to clear infection, and she will most likely need an elizabethan collar to prevent her from scratching the area until it is healed.

Good Luck

Theresa
