we just purchased an 8wk old yorkshire terrier tea cup puppy. we had just got our puppy he was flown in from texas to portland oregon on friday evening. saturday, he had not eaten since that morning. durning the morning yesterday he was very playful was up runing around drinking water but not eating his stool was normal. about 6pm saturday night he started to act very lethargic but he was sleeping this went on and we were very worried by the way he was acting . midnight he woke up was drinking water again and wanting to play. we put him to bed and I woke up this morning to him crying in his sleep he had wet him self and was acting very lethargic again he has cried not stop has not woke up now hes drooling and whimpering almost consistenly now for 1hour and half. My concern is that he has not eaten since yesterday morning hes drinking only when hes awake and the last time I saw him drink was at 1am this morning. Should I be very worried or is this normal for this type of breed?

Hi,

Congratulations on your new puppy. It is always hard for a young puppy to go through a transition, particularly shipping to a new home. I would be concerned if he goes more than a day without eating anything as these guys don't regulate their blood sugar very well at a young age.

Get some Karo syrup (don't use honey) from the grocery store. Maple syrup will work as well. Put some in an eye dropper and give him about a teaspoon. That should perk him up. Get some really good puppy food (moist) - add it to his kibble. You should be feeding the same stuff that the breeder was feeding for a few weeks.

If he is vomiting or has diarrhea, he needs to be seen by your vet ASAP.

Please let me know if that doesn't work, or if you need more information.

Relist: I still need help.
Dr. Boyer,
How long should it take after giving him the maple syrup before we should see a change in our baby?

Dear friend,

Dr Boyer is offline. You should see your baby perk up in less than ten minutes after the syrup. Get some unflavored pedialyte and give him that by dropper to repace his electrolytes. Also feed him some cottage cheese or boiled chicken - anything to get him eating as his blood sugar will drop and stay low if he does not eat.

Please get back to us and let us know how he is. As Dr Boyer said - if he does not perk up and start eating soon - you must have a vet see him. A baby like him could go downhill very quickly if he does not eat and drink.

Very sincerely,

Terri
