lump between jaws

I have a 12 yr old qtr horse that has a large (golfball size) lump under his neck, between his two jaw bones. It is somewhat soft, but seems tender to him. He has always been vaccinated regularly. His electrolytes were low about a week ago, we thought he may colic, but with the electrolyte paste and putting a hose into his mouth to make him drink, he seemed to snap out of it and has been eating and drinking normally the past week. I just noticed this new bump today (has not been ridden in about 4 days)
Thank you for your time,
Shari

Hello,

Thank you for sending your question to Just Answer!

It sounds as though your horse could have possibly hit himself, or was kicked or bumped by another horse.

Even though this is highly likely, a lump in this area could be a gland that is infected and should be closely watched. Also, with the previous incidents you described, I am leaning towards this possiblity. If you are able, take his temperature (with 100-101 being normal) and if he is running a low-grade temp or higher, I would definitely recommend having your vet look at him right away.

Also, any time he changes his eating routine; goes off his hay or grain, not drinking enough water you run the risk of colic and/or possible dehyration.

I hope this helps. Please let me know if you need further information.
