We have two parakeets. A male and a female we believe. The female has started pulling her chest feathers out and it's not just molting. Also, her butt looks big. Other than that, they both are eating and act very normal.   What might be the problem and should we take the female to a vet?

If you have a male and female she may be getting ready to lay an egg. The pulling out of the feathers is sometimes a nesting behavior and the fact that she looks swollen may indicate that there is an egg present and will shortly be laid. If there is no egg then it would be a good idea to have your vet exam her. They can develope tumors which show the same swelling. She can also develope a condition where she is eggbound, she can't lay the egg. If this occurs then she need to get to the vet quickly to get help, this can be life threatening. If she seems in distress it may be wise to have her checked otherwise don't bother her too much and let nature take its course. Make sure that she is supplied with extra calcium, like ground up cuttlebone sprinkled on the food. Hopefully congratulations will be in order soon. Good luck.
