degen neck

Sent to Pet Experts July 11 12:58 PM

My dog is 8 and a half years old, in good health with no medical history. Recently she has been in pain when she lays down and gets up. My current vet has suggested that it could be the beginning of "degenerative neck disease" which is common in large breed dogs. Can you provide me with more info on this type of condition? Is it common? Curable? What else could it be based upon the basic info provided?

Optional Information:
Age: 8; Female; Breed: American pitbull terrier

Been to vet, waiting for x-ray results

If her neck is bothering her make sure to only use a harness for leash walks. You can leave her collar on to hold her tags but you don't want her pulling on it.
These sites go over spine and neck problems.

You may find surgery will help, or accupuncture it all depends on where the problem is and how bad it is.
If you haven't had her tested for tick carried diseases you might want to do that as those can cause muscle and joint pain in dogs.
Hope this helps you!
