Question

Boston Ear Hematoma

Sent to Pet Experts July 11, 2006 12:47 p.m.

I have a boston terrier who has developed an ear hematoma. This is the second one that he has had in the last 3 months. The first one we had drained and plugged, and he had to wear an e-collar. We recently noticed his ear bothering him again (last week) and took him into the vet who prescribed an antiflammitory and drops. Yet he still developed a hematoma overnight (happened much faster than the first one) We have just spent over $250 on him and are not in a position to afford another $500 bill, what happens if we do nothing but continue to treat the infection?

Optional Information:
Age: 3; Male; Breed: Boston Terrier

Already Tried:
Treated yeast infection, prior hematoma drained

If the hematoma is not drained then you may end up with a dog that has a crumpled ear. The scarring will make the ear look unsightly to many.
You maybe getting repeat ear infections due to a problem such as a food allergy.
You can read about ear infections here
http://marvistavet.net/html/body_ear_infections.html
and about aural hematoma's here

You may want to get the ear cultured to see what kind of infection you are dealing with there. And you might want to see if going to a diet change such as Wellness fish, duck, rabbit, or venison formula will end the ear infections.
Hope this helps you!

From this information, it sound like he will be fine medically if we do not have the hematoma surgically corrected, the effects will only be cosmetic. So the conofite drops that we have should fix the ear infection, but it sounds like we have an underlying problem. I am guessing this is probably also why he licks his paws so much (he has always done this) But he has also developed some cosmetic spots on his skin, are these also related to the allergy? He does not eat table scraps at all, and is fed Nutro Max Natural. Other than his food, the only thing we give him is Iams dog treats and ice cubes. The hematomas did not begin until we moved to Charlotte, NC from Boone, NC (it is much hotter and more humid here) but he is almost always inside. His previous own was in the Charlotte area and had him outside much more, but never had issues with blotching or hematomas. Thanks

Exactly right the problem would be cosmetic.
If he is a paw licker I'd suspect allergies might be the underlying issue.
Thing with food allergies is the dog becomes allergic to something he eats after being exposed to it for some time.
Inhalant allergies are also a possibility.
You can read more about allergic skin issues here

Look at the ingredients lists on the foods you are feeding including the treats.
You might find swapping to a food such as Wellness fish, duck, rabbit, or venison might help.
You might also find using some plain Benadryl will help with his itching issues. Try 1mg per pound of dog every 8-12 hours. Most of the tablets are 25mg (check to make sure) so a 12 pound dog would get 1/2 a tablet per dose and a 25 pound dog would get a whole tablet.
