Feline Acne
Sent to Pet Experts July 06 04:06 PM

My 10 month old nutered male Persian cat has a black type fungas growing on his chin. My vet said it maybe a feline Acne and prescribed a Clearasil cleansing pad. This has made no effect on the condition. I am now cleaning the area with hyrogen peroxide and applying Clearsil treatment cream and combing out the black flee like debree that appears to" grow" daily ,and over the past 2 months. No fleas can be found and he is a indoor cat. The area is red and is very sensative when combed with a very fine baby comb. No draining or sores can be seen. Could this be another fungus or alergy ??? Your advice please !! Bob

Dear Bob,

There is a particular type of feline acne that is very specific to Persians - so much so that is is named after them - Persian facial dermatitis. You can read about it here:

http://www.fabcats.org/acneandstudtail.html

It is very effectifley treated with a drug called mupirocin. Here is info about this medication:

http://www.blackwell-synergy.com/doi/abs/10.1046/j.1365-3164.1997.d01-16.x

While mild cases of feline acne respond to human acne pads - the more severe type seen in perisan cats usually does not.

Please print this info and show it to your DVM so your boy can get on the proper medication ASAP. Having this isssue is causing him agreat deal of stress which can lead to further ailments especialy in a cat his age.

Please let me know how he is and if you need any further info or links or have any additional questions. I will be more than happy to help in any way possible.

Very sincerely,

Terri
