i have a 2 and a half year old french mastiff (male). who is an angel. But he has fits very regular. he has been on medication and it did nothing. he has fits one after another and is unconciunce for sometimes 45 mins. he can go 2 days 9 days the longest is 22 days.he then paces after but this can go on for days till he eventually stops. then after a time it all starts again. I am very worried he is suffering and that he maybe in pain after. he has had 17 fits in 12 hours. my vet has said he wouldn make old bones and is now advising to have him put to sleep. his glands are also up and swollen all the time they never go down. my vet has done tests and found nothing to answer for sonnys fits. i am at my wits end to know wat to do for his best. amanda

I would consider a biopsy of the lymph nodes to rule out lymphoma. Sometimes fine needle aspirates give false negatives or are inconclusive. He may also benefit from being tested for lymes disease as this can cause enlarged lymph nodes and neurological symptoms. If your aren't up for this you can request a trial of doxycycline to see if this helps with potential infection.

If he isn't currently on medications he should be to help to control or minimize the seizures. Maybe with the last time you tried it the dosage wasn't high enough. The levels need to be checked routinely. Also, pottasium bromide can be added to the mixture with phenobarbital to help with seizure control.

I would also recommend he have a complete blood profile done. He could have liver issues that are contributing to his seizure that may be able to be corrected. If you haven't been seen by a neurologist now is the time to do so. They may be able to perform a EEG and an MRI to rule out issues with the brain like a tumor. Also, there are newer medications that are being tested that may have some better results.

I would also request a syringe or two of valium that you can give rectally when the seizure is severe to halt it until you can get him into the hospital.

There is a possibility these cannot be controlled and if this is the case then euthanasia may be your best option. But if you haven't tried all avenues I would take a look into them first, because I know how hard it would be for you to lose him.

Good luck
