Rabbit nasal discharge

Sent to Pet Experts July 4 2006 at 3:08 PM

What are the possible causes of white nasal discharge? My rabbit lives in a penned area of the yard with his mother and his brother. They are not exposed to other animals. It has been in the 90 degrees here all week but they always have water and shade. The discharge started today, his breathing occassionally sounds like there is sinus congestion and he looks sad.

Optional Information:
Age: 3; Male; Breed: Holland Lop

Already Tried:
cleaned area with warm cloth and put him in the house so I can watch him.

The may have developed an upper respiratory infection which can occur regardless of weather conditions. It is also possible that he has an abcess in the nasal cavity or has a foreign body in his nose causing the problem. You should get him to your vet for an exam. If he starts feeling ill he could go down very quickly, stop eating, drinking. If his intestinal tract shuts down he will be in very severe trouble.

Reply to animal eyes's Post: Thanks. I knew he needed to see the vet but they are all closed for the holiday. The ONLY emergency vet in town doesn't know anything about rabbits. I will get him in first thing tomorrow. I didn't know if there was anything I can do for him in the meantime.

Keep him warm but not hot. If you can try to make sure he gets plenty of water. If your vet hasn't heard of Critical Care Feeding Formula. It can be found on the Oxbow Food website.
www.oxbowhay.com Critical Care is only sold to vets so they would have to get it for you.
Good Luck I hope he's not too serious.
