Parvovirus
Sent to Pet Experts July 02 10:11 AM

my 7 week old puppy was diagnosed with parvovirus on wednesday . Tuesday evening he had vomited and wednesday morning he would not eat or drink anything at all so I called my vet i opted to have him hospitalized so he would have a better chance of survival. He broke with the bloddy diarrhea on thursday and he is still having some vomiting but now his vomit has blood in it and the diarrhea has pretty much stopped. I just spoke with my vet about an hour ago and he said when he went in to check on him last night he half expected to find him dead. He is now giving him Pepto- bismol to try to get the vomiting under control. We go see our puppy every day and he looks so depressed. My question to you is this, how long can he go on like this?, and do you think that he would be better off if we brought him home? I feel so helpless and I hate seeing him locked up in that cage for 23 hours a day. When can I expect this virus to be out of his system?
                                Thank you ,

Hi Lori, I'm so sorry about your puppy, but he needs to stay in the hospital where they can give him emergency care if he needs it. Your Vet is right, at his age, his chance of beating parvo is slim. He needs IV because if he dehydrates his heart will stop. There is nothing you can do at home that will help him get better. You want him home for you and you have to understand, he is NOT over this yet. Most puppies do not survive parvo. He is depressed because he is very ill, but being in your home he will only go down hill faster because he needs Iv and the Vets consistent attention. I think if you bring him home, the trip home, you trying to pet him and make him eat will make him go down hill faster. I know you love him, but you have to love him enough to let the Vet do his job and hope he can save him. This is not over yet. He has lost nutrition, and there could be permanent damage to his brain, kidneys, heart or CNS and only the Vet will know. He was trying to prepare you for the worse when he told you he thought the puppy would be dead my now. But your puppy is a fighter, so leave him where he has the best chance to get better. You have to be brave now to. Good luck, I will say a prayer for you and your baby boy and hope the Vet has another miracle up his sleeve. If you have any other questions, please ask.
