Hi,

I'm sorry your shitzu is having problems. Is she spayed? If not, perhaps she's in heat.

If you're sure it's coming from the urethra and not just the vulva blood in the urine is a serious issue that should be addressed quickly. From a western medicine perspective, it is most likely caused by bladder stones. A simple xray and urinalysis by the vet can rule this in/out. Untreated, the infection can ascend up to the kidneys and cause permanent renal problems. The bladder stones can make it so your dog can't urinate. Please monitor her urination carefully. She should be started on antibiotics ASAP -- 4 days is too long to wait. Go to your local emergency clinic for an exam, urinalysis and antibiotics.

From a homeopathic perspective, you can try Pulsatilla 30C from a health food store. Give 10 pellets on her tongue one time. This may or may not work to clear up her problem.

I hope this is helpful. Let me know if you need more information.

Hi Doc,
She is sprayed and this is very recent development, in fact just noticed it this evening. Gave her a bath this am and wasn't any problems. There is the signs of light dark blood and also fresh red blood, but not in any great quanity. She shows no discomfort but I'm swaying towards taking her in the Companion Pet clinic we have here in Gresham Or, as I think they will be open on Monday. If not will take her to emergency clinic then, unless you think it needs closer attention ie tomorrow. It seems to be like a drainage situation, more than anything. I used to be a para rescue med tech for the Air Force, Air Rescue so am familiar with some things. I have the following drugs available, from storeage: Torbutrol 1mg, Antirobe Awuadrp 25 mg, Tussigon Tab 5 mg and Acepromazine10mg. If any of these would help please let me know, again thanks so much for the help. John Tucker PS she is one of 4 in the family, our children ya know.lol

Hi,

You should be ok until Monday, but I wouldn't let it go past then. None of the drugs you list would be helpful. Torbutrol is a pain med, Antirobe is an antibiotic, but the wrong kind, Tussigon is a cough tablet and Acepromazine is a tranquilizer.

I hope that this helps......good luck.
