Question

Need help making the right decision for surgery/Fracture etc.

My 6 mo old Golden Ret was hit by a car on 6/29. He has a broken front right leg, just above the elbow, pretty jagged. There is only ONE specialist, an orthopedic surgeons group, in this area, and they advised a very expensive procedure, to place a permanent plate with several screws in his leg.
#1 Will his leg grow ok?
#2. What about nerve damage, can I be guaranteed this will work, as it will cost me about $3000?
#4) Why won't just a plain cast do with this kind of break? I had another dog with a similar injury years ago, and this orthopedic said a human would do just fine with a cast, but a dog can't. Why not? I said it was a poodle (my other dog similar situation), she said that a poodle is much smaller, but my poodle was a standard bred! Not so. This vet was very arrogant in her pushing me to her opinion, and didn't explain things to my satisfaction. Pushing EKGs (multiple ones) and many tests. Looks like she likes the money, but the only group around here, and they have a good reputation!
#5) My regular vet looked at the x-rays(2nd opinion, above vet was really angry at this!), & said he wouldn't be comfortable with just pins that he could do, it may not hold.
#6 The orthopedic vet on call wanted to do several EKGs before surgery. Is that really a necessary extra expense. We did one on Friday, (came out normal) now do we do another one, tomorrow, a day before surgery as she suggests? Our puppy was literally running around today on the 3 good legs, and doing well for the first time in 48 hours, with his splint of course, from the emergency clinic we took him to on Thursday night. What will happen if we don't do this plate thing for his leg? What are our options? Surgery is scheduled for Monday the 3rd of July right now. dh doesn;t want to go for the expense, but I think he may really need it. Called the same vet and she said my only other option is to amputate. Why would that be on a severe break? Why can't we do the least restrictive thing and hope for the best? The x-ray does show a jagged break just above the right elbow. I know that the orth vet I talked with isn't the actual surgeon, but dislike her arrogance, and don't trust her opinion. Please give some value to what my options are. Thanks much.

REPLIED Check Mark

If the leg can be aligned and a cast put on the dog I would consider doing that as a first option. If the leg doesn't heal you can always go in and do the surgery.
I would ask the vet what would have been done before the surgery for plating was available to treat such an injury if the owner did not opt for amputation.
You can read here that there is more than one way to treat a bone break
http://www.lowchensaustralia.com/health/brokenbones.htm
If financing the care would help see if www.carecredit.com will let you finance it.
And if the cost is really too much, and the vet cannot tell you if there is nerve damage to the leg, which might require its removal later, you should know that dogs can do fine on three legs.
I think the reason they are doing the EKG testing is that there are inherited heart diseases known in Goldens so they don't want to find out a little late that is the problem.
I do think you can see what the vet thinks about using a cast to keep the leg immobile and then only amputate if the leg has nerve damage or won't heal. Sure surgeons always want to operate as the best way to go on this sort of injury but you may find some compromise is possible if you just can't afford the surgery.
Hope this helps you!

I already have an answer that I liked from one of your people, and I didn't mean to ask 2 times, so may I receive a refund of $8.00 for this answer. I already asked the orth. vet about casting, as she said, and she said it can always be done, as in here, but it would be more money and who wants to put a puppy through that much more! Please refund.
