we just got a chihuahua. he's 3 months old. after a few days he got diahrrhea and the vet gave us some pills to give him for 5 days. while he had diahrhea he had poop accidents at night. he doesn't appear to have the diahrhea anymore but even when I wake up and take him out at 3:00 a.m., he's pooped in his crate by the time I get up at 6. Is this normal. I'm starting to worry because people keep saying he shouldn't poop in his crate.

Reply to Gina's Post: I take him out in the morning during the week around 6 (around 8 on his first weekend); feed him around 6:15 and then out again around 7:00. He goes out about every 1-2 hours. I take his food away around 9:00. I take him out last around 11:30/12:00. He is in the 24" crate; I just found the divider so I just put that in last night, cutting off about half his space. (We just got him on 6/17.)

Ok..I am glad you got a divider :) I would not feed him past 6 or 7 pm. and keep the same last out as you have scheduled. He is still very much a baby and can only hold it for a few hours at a time, so it does not surprise me he can't hold it for 6-8 hours. You may have to get up in the middle of the night to let him relieve himself so he won't go in the crate :) Make sure you clean the crate with an enzyme cleaner like Natures Miracle to remove the odor to HIM :) Also, try feeding and watering him in the crate...Dog's are less apt to eliminate where they eat, drink, and sleep. :) Be patient, he will be able to hold longer and longer each week :)

Reply to Gina's Post: Thank you for your response. That is pretty much the same response I've gotten from my friends who have dogs, and the vet who I just spoke to while I was making his next appointment. We are new to the dog-owning arena and Chewy is such a cutey I was just concerned. People saying they house broke their dogs in 3 days was making me feel horrible -- its been almost 2 weeks! Thank you.
