Can you explain in detail the cause and expected recovery, relapse and prevention of a "Retro Bulbar Abcess"? My elder cat developed one from her mouth after noticing her not eating for days (my obese voracious eater) I took her to vet (HX Hyperthyroidism 6+ yrs ago treated by Radiocat, cured, then found hiding kidney disease in 2002. In 04, bloodtests showed IMPROVEMENT of kidney function . Current testing showed no recurrance of either, but no indication of why not eating. We put her on appetite stimulants. They worked a few days then cat biting me & not taking it. went to vets to get a pill device and tech showed me how to use & Madama bit her too! She noticed possible swelling(now 10 days since blood test) they kept her that Sat. & by Mon. her eye was bulging out & actual abcess extended to pharynx and pushed it to side. Worst one Vet ever saw. He performed surgery & hoped to find an abcess & puss but braced me for mass or tumor. It seems to have been just abcess. He finally told me at check up (Mouth looks GREEAT!) that he didn't think she'd be going home.

So, can you give me all the strait dope on this abcess. He's spent so much time with me I don't want to bother him any more but I'd really like to know more medical details.
Thank you.
Sharon
