My yellow lab Tucker is 2 1/2 years old. I took him for a recheck on his ears yesterday. The vet (new to me) said he had developed a periodontal condition and needed his teeth cleaned (for $500). He had just been to that same office a month before and no such thing was mentioned. Do dogs this young need to have their teeth cleaned?

Age: 2; Male; Breed: yellow lab

ACCEPTED Check Mark

It is unusual for so young a dog to need his teeth cleaned. You may find that giving him something good to chew will resolve any tartar issues.
Was the vet able to show you the problem in the dog's mouth? If not I think I'd try your boy with some good chew items such as a giant smoked bone or knuckle, perhaps a pig ear a week, if he will eat it safely, or one of the dental toys where you put a treat inside and the dog chews to get it out. You could even buy a small bag of Science Diet Dental Diet and use two or three chunks of it as treats every day.
You may also want to consider seeing another vet for a check up to see if you get the same opinion about the dental disease.
Hope this helps you!

I also think he is a little young...I think maybe this particular Dr was trying tp up her $500 appts. No other vet in the office has said anything to me. He was just there 4 weeks ago. Thanks for your help!
