My 15 year old black lab mix has an area of pelvic edema ...

Sent to Pet Experts June 20, 2006 9:40 p.m.

My 15 year old black lab mix has an area of pelvic edema the size of a large grapefruit. His testes and penis have almost disappeared withing this swollen area. There is no pain or tenderness, and he is able to urinate and defecate without difficulty. His appetite is excellent. i am wondering if you have any ideas on what this is.
Thanks

Could the dog have been bitten by something like a bee or a spider?

This swelling could also be a circulatory problem. When the fluid in the tissues cannot be picked up and returned to the blood circulation, there will be edema. There may be a blood clot somewhere or there may be an enlarged lymph node preventinglymphatic drainage. You should let your vet examine the dog and possibly give some Lasix to help remove the fluid.
