Ticks... Help

i have an outdoor cat and everytime he comes in the house i find one or two ticks on him. One time i found one so engorged that it was the size of a berry. i asked my vet about it and they said i should just wait to see any symptoms occur to get him checked out. He has had flea and tick medication and apparently it’s not working well enough for these ticks, should i be worried??
