Hi,

The Leopard Gecko generally experiences eye problems as a secondary infection to an initial infection. From the information that you have provided in your post, it sounds as if this is what is taking place with your leo.

Dusty environments lead to bacterial conjunctivitis and it sounds like this may be what your Leo has. He will need the medications that the vet has presccribed in order to recover.

You should also clean his cage thoroughly and change the substrate in it that you are currently using to prevent this from happening again. Paper towels and Newspapers are the best choice for this as they don't create dust particles that can infect the eye.

While there are many substrate products available for purchase, they can become harmful (sand, vermiculite, calci sand, ie.). Each of these products contain particles that if ingested can cause blockage in the digestive track.

If this information has been helpful to you then please do ACCEPT. Positive feedback is also appreciated. Let me know if I can help you with this further.

Good Luck, I sincerely hope that all works out for your little guy!

Reply to Charlie's girl's Post: Dear Charlies Girl, thank you for your response. I see that most of the questions you have answered have to do with dogs. Do you have experience with geckos? I truly need to make sure that what I am doing is what is best for him! The substrate that I use is carpet. I take everything out of his 20 gallon aquarium and clean it once a week. Including washing the carpet. I have a coolwhip dish with moist papertowels in it that I change everyother day. I thought that I was doing everything right!

Hi,

Your observation is correct and that is because I was on that panel prior to becoming an expert on the in "general" pet panel. I am well informed on the Gecko. My son has many terrariums filled with Gecko's and several tanks of the Leopard. Additionally, prior to being an expert in any area on Just Answer we have to qualify through a review board of intensive scrutiny by highly qualified Experts. We are given a number of questions that range from fin to feather and if we do not answer them appropriately then we receive a thank you for our efforts!

Trust me, the carpeting you are using is awful, awful, awful. Not only does it harbor dust it contains micro fibers that can get into Leo's eyes and create an infection. Not only this, but it puts him in a high risk category for other unwanted illness and injurys. The nails of the Leo can become caught and they can literally pull them out at the nails matrix in their efforts to get "free" so to speak.

I hope that this is reassuring to you and if it is helpful, then please do ACCEPT. Any other questions? You can always find me here at just answer!

Thank you and best wishes for a speedy recovery.
