Question

swithching food

Sent to Pet Experts June 13, 2006 7:21 p.m.

Over 2 yrs ago my vet suggested that I place my then 1yr old lab/beagle mix on the science diet light food for wt loss. They said she was prone to gaining wt. I did as I was told, but her skin became very dry and irritated. My groomer suggested a different food called Nutro Max Holistic for wt mgmt. Within 2 wks, her coat was shiney and her skin improved back to normal. We have been on this food ever since. I recently visited the vet and now they want to switch her to Hills R/D prescription for wt mgmt. The food that she is on is all natural and corn meal is not on the list. But this new food has corn meal as the first ingredient. I am not sure what to do?   Confused

Hills is good but the Nutro Max would be better for managing her weight and on top of it being all natural it will allow for the shiny coat and improved texture of her skin. If the Nutro Max has been good at weight management for her then I would advise against switching to the Hill's. I am a firm believer that anytime youo can use a diet without additives then it is better for the overall health management.

one of the problems is the fact that she is still 10 sbs over wt. So I guess she is not being managed. However- I do not attribute it to the food as much as the table scraps and extra treats. So do I still switch or do I stay on the same and be better about the other stuff?

You need to stick with her original diet and stop the treats and snacks, if you do want to feed her some treats use some fresh veggies such as celery and carrots they do love veggies and they are also good for them as well. The diet will be able to be managed better without the scraps although once in awhile I would still give her a treat but do cut down on them and stop the table scraps altogether.
