Question

Rectal Bleeding

Sent to Pet Experts June 13, 2006 6:44 p.m.

I just took on an Australian Shepherd who is about 2 years old. I had to put him in the garage for a few hours this morning because he keeps breaking down the gate. When I went to let him out there was throw up all over the garage. He has had mock bowl movements for about a week and as of today is having some bleeding during bowl movements. His behavior is normal and he seem alert with no apparent discomfort. Do you think he needs immediate care, or just I just watch his condition for a few days and see what happens?

Is the gate wood?
Is there any chance he ingested any or other non food item?

What did he eat last?

yes, the gate is wood. I don't think he there is anything else he could have ingested from the garage. There is a bag of powdered cement that is open that he could have reached, though it does not appear to been disturbed.

Dear friend,

I am really concerned that he has ingested some sharp splintery pieces of wood. I know that this is alot to ask but check the vomit and see if there is any wood in it. If you do see any - you need to immediately take him to a vet because a sharp piece could puncture the intestine, stomach or bowel and cause internal bleeding.

If you see othing and his behavior stays normal - you can feed him some cottage cheese or boiled chicken or hamburger meat with a little cooked white rice as he may just have a digestive upset.

However, if he acts unusual or you see more blood, his gums get pale or he seems weak or shocky - you need to get him to a vet ASAP.
PLEASE get back to me ad let me know how he is. I will be here til 11:00 EDT.

Very sincerely,

Terri

He usually just eats dry dog food. I will try the other foods that you suggested and see if they help. I brought him to my office with me so I could monitor him this afternoon. I will check the vomit for wood when we get home tonight. His behavior is still normal and has not altered any this afternoon. Thanks so much for your feedback. I will watch for the other signs you mentioned over the next couple of days. Thanks again!!
