Question

Avian Balance Problem

Sent to Pet Experts June 13, 2006 6:35 p.m.

I have a 13 yr old Amazon Blue Front male Parrot that in November became unbalanced and falls off his perch, gazes around as if he is have a seizure. This
happened once before about 5 years ago and we ended up at NC State and he snapped out of it without anyoce really knowing what the problem was. At that time he
had terrible seizures and would become lethargic. This time it is not as bad, however
it has lasted for 4-5 months longer. We have taken him to a local vet, who said that she thought it may be a blood clot or hardening of the arteries. She suggested that we allow
them to perform experimental surgery. She suggested an MRI, but that could possibly
not give us an answer. Any suggestions? He is eating, drinking, etc well. He is just very unbalanced and constantly falls and it is almost like he has Parkinsons or inner ear problems. One foot also does not grip well.
