I brought home an 8 week old chihuahua today. She seems to be acting fine. She has plenty of energy and is sleeping alot like you would expect a puppy to do. However, I noticed some blood in her stool. She has what appears to be a regular bowel movement, then at the end it looks like blood is dripping out. What should I do?

This is probably from straining to have a bowel movement. The easiest way to prevent this is to use a well moistened food. If you put the dry food in water for a while to soak it before you feed it, that makes it move through better. If you have not had the dog to the vet for a worm check, that may also be a cause of blood inthe stool.

Reply to dr4pets's Post: She has been to the vet with the breeder and has had her first shots and worm treatment. She is due for her second set of shots and worm treatment on June 11th. Is it possible for her to have worms if she has received the treatment to prevent them? Would it be dangerous to wait until the 11th for her to see the vet? I'm just concerned because she is so small...being a chihuahua, she is just under a pound right now..Thanks.

If the puppy has been properly dewormed withthe right drug for the parasites she has, then you can wait until the next vet visit for the deworming. If the puppy has whipworms and the vet did not use something that kills them, they can cause blood in the stool. Whipoworms are often difficult to identify because they do not produce many eggs.
