My 13 1/2 yr. old husky, Shanna, has a football shaped mangiosarcoma growing out of her liver. 4 mos ago when I noticed she had seemed to slow down, we brought her for a physical & ultrasound. Nothing but slightly elevated livers. 2 weeks ago she seemed very tired & disinterested in eating. Now her livers are out of sight, the tumor is about 1/2 the size of a football, she is severely anemic. She is on 1Cap 2X daily, Vet Solutions Omega3, hemp seed oil, 3 pet tabs daily, 10 mg prednisone, 3X dly, 200 mg sam-e 2X dly, 20mg of famotidine 2X dly,1dropper Hi-Vite Drops dly. The vet keeps recommending surgery and says she may get up to 1 year. I feel guilty because I prefer to go w/another vet (highly recommended) who includes holistic, homeopathy, herbals, etc & possibly ttransfusions for anemia. She also has spondylosis and some disk compression at the base of her spine. Is surgery a viable alternative, all things considered??? Her diet has always consisted of high quality dry food w/half of each meal a mix of organically raised beef, or chidken w/broccoli and carrots & br. rice (all organic). Now that her appetite is back, is this okay to keep feeding her? Meat/chix cooked -- vegs steamed, all done in food processor & added to rice (ratios 1/3 1/3 1/3). Is there anything I can do to keep her comfortable for as long as possible w/out surgery.?

If the tumor is on one lobe only removing it could gain her a lot of time. If the whole liver is involved supportive care might be best.
I think you need to see if you can pin down more about how much of the liver is involved to make a solid decision on which way to go.
To your diet I'd be sure to add a multivitamin mineral tablet to ensure properly balanced nutrition is given.
With the tumor's rapid growth you may need to decide soon which way you wish to go in treatment. Your holistic vet may be able to help you with herbal support for the liver.
