I have a eight year old off the track tb who is in with a herd of nine older horses and one very old mare with Cushings went down and wouldn't get up.... and the owner caught my gelding leaning over her trying to pull at her neck and halter until she got up and then the owner got scared my horse was hurting her and ran at him with a stick and she says he charged at her .... ran back to her horse which was now on its feet and dragged her by the halter back to the herd until the angry owner got the vet out and they took her out.   There were no bite marks or blood on the old mare, just welts and Tanner is not even a dominant gelding and has a great personality.   What would cause his obsession with the downed animal? The owner of the old mare is thinking my horse is insane.

Hi! Your horse is a hero. Listen. Horses are herd animals. They are also very protective. Your horse realized something was wrong. He was trying to get her up because his instincts kicked in and an animal down is prey for predators. Horses in the wild, will stand around a mare giving birth so wolves and coyotes can not attack her or kill the foal. They will form a circle around her and keep watch. Often the herd mare will circle to make sure they all stay alert and keep a tight quard on her. All your horse was doing was trying to help her. I think maybe you should give him some extra love and a treat. His intent was to help not to hurt. So is your horse insane? NO, unfortunately humans are, because they jump to conclusions unstead of knowing horse sense. How many times have you read in stories of horses saving the life of their owner? Many. How often have horses died from broken hearts? Often. They are in many way are just big dogs and we all have read in the newspapers of a dog that drag an owner a mile after a heart attack, raced to a neighbors house and barked for help or stood their ground against a charging bull to protect a child. Your horse was trying to get her up and know she would be safe. If you want to speak to me, or ask me any questions, I would love to help you. If your neighbor has an issue, ask them to speak to me. I've had horses for over 35 years and I can tell you stories that will make you cry. They are are more human then you know. I'm very surprised the Vet did not comment on this. He must not own his own horses.
