Neutering

Sent to Pet Experts September 26 2004 at 12:36 PM

My dog was neutered on Thursday (9/23). He was very disoriented on the day of surgery, but was happy and feeling better on Friday. Saturday and Sunday he has been extremely lethargic. All he wants to do is lay flat on the floor. He looks miserable, but is eating and drinking well, and going to the bathroom just fine, although he does not want to go on walks at all. I did notice this morning that he has two uniform lumps on either side of his penis. I was told by a vet emergency # that this was normal, and they were urinal glands. As long as he was urinating normally they would be fine. They have since gone away. My questions are, how long will my puppy be down in the dumps, is this normal and/or caused from pain, and is there anything that I should be doing besides loving him, and letting him be?

My Shih Tzu does that every time he has been under anesthesia,
only he does not eat. If he is eating, drinking, and going to the
bathroom, give him a few more days to recover. If he has not
perked up by next week, then I would call the vet or if anything
changes (stops eating, etc.) He may be just a little
uncomfortable.
As far as the bumps, they are the bulbus glands. It just means
he was "happy" to see you. Totally normal. They are used in the
"tie" process of a breeding.

I hope your boy perks up and feels better soon!

Forgot to add, as far as what you can do, you can ask your vet
for some light pain killers, but for the most part, just let him
rest and love him.

You might want to take him temp and just make sure that it is
normal. Normal temp is 100-102, although since he is not
being very active, it should be on the low side.
