Last night my doberman came running into the house and right into his cage. When I went to feed him I notice blood all through his cage. I looked at his paw and saw that he had ripped one of his nails completely off. I did get the blooding to stop is there something else that I should do. Our vet is out the office today, what should I do? Any information would be greatly apperiated.

Today you can clean the paw off with hydrogen peroxide or betadine solution and then put neosporin or triple antibiotic ointment on the sore area.
Before you do that if you want you can soak the foot in warm Epsom Salts solution. Some people find just standing the dog in a tub with the solution works and others use a bucket to soak just that foot. Then you clean and add ointment afterwards.
Hope this helps you!

Reply to Nancy Holmes's Post: Do I have to worry about an infection to set in? And will he be alright with the amount of blood that he lost?

He should be fine with the blood loss unless he seems weak or has a pale tongue today it probably wasn't as much as it seems.
You do have to worry about infection which is why I suggested cleaning and antibiotic ointment.
You should have your vet check the injury too to make sure the nail will grow back OK. The vet might want to give you oral antibiotics too.
Don't bandage it as air healing is best.
If his nails are long, trimming them back may help keep him from breaking more.
