My nine year old boxer/hounds eyes are dialated all the time he has been having a hard time seeing for about a month his normal vet says there is nothing to be done. Have you ever heard of this and do you know what causes it?

Hi Customer (name blocked for privacy),

The pupils dialate because the optic center in the brain is receiving no images, and the center responds by opening the pupils to allow more light into the eye.

In this case, there is enough light, but the receptor (retina) is not functioning, and has been gradually deteriorating, as you have witnessed in the gradual loss of his sight.

There are several retinal deterioration conditions, quite similar to those found in human medicine, but visualization of the retina is necessary to tell which.

Sometimes tumors of the optic neural pathway will cause loss of vision, but it interrupts neural messages going both directions. He has demonstrated that the outflow path is functioning, ruling out a tumor.

Pets with vision loss have no emotional hills to climb, as we do when suffering the loss. This may make their accomodation to blindness less traumatic.

They seem to do quite well, and get around in their surroundings nicely, as long as you don't rearrange the furniture too often. Be patient.

I hope this answers your questions. If not, feel free to ask .
