i have a 20 year old quarter horse mare. recently she developed an infection in the back of her knee. it started out as a small abscess and made her entire lower leg swell. my vet recommended a pressure bandage... but when we went to change it, we saw that it had caused the abscess to blow out the back of the knee... and now infection had dripped all down her leg. there is now a significant amount of proud flesh involved also. i am at my wits end and so is my vet. we have tried several treatments but nothing has helped. what do you suggest?

Hi! I don't mean to speak badly of your Vet. Some wounds are real hard to call. But in the future, he should use an I&D and not a pressure bandage. What happened was the abcess had no where to drain. If he had made an incision, and inserted a few inches of gauze and left a piece out to drain, the infection would have followed that path. What happened, was the pressure bandage caused the abcess to move under the skin, build up in intensity and ate thorough the flesh. It literally exploded. Tell me all the other things you have tried so I don't waste your time and mind with a repeat. Then I will try to help you.
