I am planning on purchasing a female Yorkshire Terrier

I am planning on purchasing a female Yorkshire Terrier puppy to bred with my male. Is there a danger of having complications when giving birth with a female under a certain weight and how old should the dog be before breeding?

There is always a danger to the female if she is bred to a male considerably larger than she is. The size issue is even more important in smaller breeds of dogs because there is not much room for rror. When purchasing your new pup look for parents that are about the same size as your male. That should give you a pretty accurate idea of what her size will be. As for breeding age. No dog should be bred before to years of age. It gives them time to mature before having a litter of their own to care for.

I hope this helps. Please let me know if you need further info.

My male is only 6 months old at this time but I would say he is about 2.25 lbs. When I bought him from the breeder I was told he would problably be about 3 lbs. full grown. But I had recently heard that complications often arise in birth with a female under 4lbs.
But if I understand you correctly as long as the male is not larger than the female it should be okay. Is that correct?
Any suggestions in how I prevent my male and female from breeding before the two years? Is there any birth control methods such as a pill?                        Sincerely,

Yes, as long as the male is not substntially larger than the female you should have no complications. I suggest having your vet monitor the pregnancy just to be on the safe side. That way you can catch any potential problems before they are serious.

There are birth control methods for dogs. It is called depo provera. It is basically the same drug used in the depo shots for human birth control. While no birth control is 100% effective I have had terrific results with it in my Great Danes. It is given once every six months for large breed dogs. Your vet can set your female up on a regular schedule. When you are ready to breed them you simply stop the shot and wait for her next heat cycle.

I hope this helps. Please let me know if you need further info.
