I have a thoroughbred that sliced the back of his ankle on a sharp object that was protruding out of the ground. It nearly sliced the back off. It is hanging on by a good quarter of an inch piece of flesh. We medicated the wound and wrapped the ankle. This happened at the end of February. The wound looked like it was healed near the end of March, so we left the wrap off over night and left the horse in his stall. When we got to the barn the next morning, the ankle had swelled twice its size and the horse was in pain. We redressed the wound and rewrapped it, gave him some Bute and the swelling went down and he was able to run on it a couple of days later. As long as we keep the ankle wrapped, there is no swelling and he can run, jump, twist, turn and act normal without any lameness at the end of the day when we bring him in. It is now nearly three months later and we are having the same problem. If we leave it unwrapped, it swells and the wound starts to oooz right where the cut flesh meets the leg and the protruding flesh gets hard and sticks out away from the leg. Do you have any advice.

Hello, it would be best to have a vet (or usually I ask a farrier out first ) to come and look if there is something inside the horse's cut or if it's an antibiotic need or actual lameness.

It doesn't quite sound like it's actually healed . (does this area look like it still needs to heal or is he reopening it before it can?

If so,consider keeping him more contained /quiet so he can heal.

You say it's oozing but not if it looks infected. It sounds like you have the right support system going on for his ankle.

Also,be sure your horse has had it's shots, especially tetanus.

Reply to Don's Post: Sorry it's taken me so long to read your answer, but funds have really been tight. We're still treating the wound. Here lately, we've been putting Wonder Dust on it. The cut is slowly but surely shrinking. I still have to keep it wrapped or it will swell. I'll stop wrapping it once the would has completely closed. He'll be going to the farrier in the next couple of weeks and I'll ask him to look at it. Our truck has been in the shop since the end of June and I have no way of transporting him until they give the truck back. A transformer was knocked from a pole by lightening and hit the top of the truck and did damage unreal. When it rains - it pours! Thanks again!
