We have a 7 month old female yellow lab. She has a ridge of "wavy" hair that is about 3-4 inches wide and goes from the back of her neck all the way down to her tail. This hair is darker and coarser than the rest of her hair. We have not seen this on any other labs. She is a full blooded, registered yellow lab. Is this a common occurence?

Optional Information:
Age: 1; Female; Breed: Yellow Lab

The coat in general in that area is longer and coarser and darker in color than the rest of the coat. Its called a dorsal stripe.
This is seen sometimes in dogs with thyroid problems or other endocrine issues. It can also be a nutritional issue.
You may want to at some point have the vet run a thyroid panel on her or just wait to see how the coat is when she is done getting her adult coat.
You might see what adding a supplement with omega 3&6 fatty acids does for her coat. Derm Caps or Linatone are common sources for those fatty acids.
Hope this helps you!
