Reply to Gina's Post: It may have slowed down the problem at first, I think in my head that that expressing was going to correct the problem so we did not pay that much attention when he came home but it may have stopped for a short time.A vet expressed them also gave him a shot of (antibiotic?) and packed him with something (antibiotic?)

It is possible that they were not completely expressed, especially if he did an external expression compared to an internal expression. External will give some relief, but it will not empty the glands. At the very least, I would give the vet a call and tell them that he is still having the symptoms. Have them check for a tumor which may be the problem with not being able to express the glands totally. I would also suggest adding a teaspoon or 2 of canned pumpkin or canned sweet potato to his diet to add some fiber to help firm the stool a bit. You might discuss changing his diet with your vet to help. A holistic dog food like Eagle Pack helps quite a bit with this problem. The fact that your vet put him on antibiotic tells me that the impaction was quite severe and he just may need what was left squeezed out. :) Take a look at this website for more information on anal gland problems and let your vet know the problem is still there :)

Wishing you all the best and hope your boy gets some relief very very quickly. :)

Reply to Gina's Post: I don't know if this whould change your answer but my dog does'nt scoot, he just sits and licks the carpet and when he lays down it does'nt seem to bother him. There is no (none) smell to the clear fluid. Also when his glands were expressed 3-4 weeks ago there was a strong odor like was described in the article.

If his glands need to be removed what kind of cost can we expect living in pitts. PA.

Is it possible that all we need to do is add more fiber to his diet?

Ok...I would still think anal gland problem even without the odor. Cost would really vary from vet to vet...I just called our vet, but he is a country upstate NY vet and he said it would run about $300 here, but in a major city I would expect a bit more, but you never know :) I would have them expressed again and checked for a tumor and yes, I would definately add some fiber to his diet...just not too much as you don't want to cause diarrhea. The problem is when the feces is a little too soft and unable to apply enough pressure to the glands to express them on their own. I am sorry I can not give you a definate cost for removal...but it is something you can discuss with your vet :)
