Question

My Australian Terrier is 17 years old and has a growth ...

Sent to Pet Experts May 16, 2006 9:12 a.m.

My Australian Terrier is 17 years old and has a growth on his neck and because of his age I have made the decision not to treat him but if I see he is uncomfortable in anyway will take action. This growth started out in the area of an oil gland (the groomer pointed it out to me). The growth looks like hyperplasic tissue to me but develops an odor with drainage. Any ideas how to treat the odor? He has no temp or sign and symptoms of infection. Thank you for you time.   PJ

If it has an odor and drains you might as the vet about direct application of an injectible antibiotic or steroid.
Even if you don't feel its an infection the odor makes me suspicious that there is something going on there.
You might also try helping it drain with hot packs. If its built up sebum he is losing getting more of it out might help. The warm/hot damp compresses can increase circulation in the area which might help with the drainage too.
Hope this helps you!
