My 2 1/2 years old pappilion likes to play fetch at breakneck speeds. Recently I've noticed that a few hours after he has played and has gone to bed, when he gets up he favors his left leg and limps for a while. Then he goes back to playing hard and seems to be OK after he "loosens" up. Then the cycle repeats its self. This had been going on for about two weeks. I've tried to keep him quiet by not playing, but he starts to play with himself and it still happens.

If its a rear leg he is lame on have your vet check him for hip or knee issues.
He may have a partial ligament tear or some hip issues. Little dogs can get hip dysplasia too it just doesn't bother them as much as it does the bigger dogs.
Hope this helps you!

Reply to Nancy Holmes's Post: It's not his rear legs. It's his front leg that's the problem. He's a leaper, and I've checked his paws for any kind of wound. He just seems to get stiff in his shoulder, and recovers just in time to get it stiff again.

OK its really common for a rear leg issue in the little guys who are very athletic.
In the front end shoulder joints and elbows can have cartilage problems. You might find glucosamine chondroitin such as Cosequin or Glycoflex can help with the lameness. An x-ray might tell you if there is any cartilage damage in the joint.
Another possibility is a neck problem. If there is any pinching of nerves in the neck area there can be lameness in a front leg. An x-ray of the neck area might show you that too.
