Hi,

Determining the sex of a red eared slider is difficult. Most owners will have a vet do a hormones test to determine the sex.

Though you can tell by looking at the claws as the males claws are much longer then the female and webbed. Also the male will flutter his front feet in front of a female during mating.

Reply to Walter's Post: the questions is not whether our turtle is male or female but what is the black slimey substance or tissue coming out of the turtles butt that is being retracted in and out

Hi,

Sorry about that I thought you were trying to determine the sex of the turtle.

This sounds like a form of Fungus infection it usually manifest themselves as grey white or black cotton-like layers on slider's shell and skin around the eyes mouth chin legs and anus. dirty water, lack of basking or inadequate feeding or/and in addition to other ailments. Fortunately, if recognized in time, fungal infections are readily curable. The usual therapy consists of salty baths few times a day.
