cysts filled sacks on between paws

Sent to Pet Experts May 4 2006 at 5:35 PM

I have a female beagle 7 years old is overweight but otherwise healthy. She has developed a pink flesh colored, soft squishy sack between her toes. She had one there about 6 months ago and she popped it open and licked it until it healed. She now has another on the same paw between her toes again and she has ruptured this one too. How do I keep this area clean and what are these? I will take her in to vet if they continue but we only go once a year or so because she gets very very car sick and vomits the whole way and back. Thank you

What you are describing sounds like an interdigital cyst. (Fancy way of saying betweent the toes) Many times theses cysts need to be curetted(scraped) out and the foot bandaged. You need to get her to stop licking them. Until you can get her to the doctor, you can keep it clean with betadine diluted 50% with water. You will also need an elizabethan collar(looks like a cone) to prevent her from licking until you can get her to the vet. If you have any antibiotic ointment such as neosporin, you can apply this to the area after cleaning with the betadine. Be careful though, greasy ointment may encourage her to lick more. You can try to put a child's sock over her foot to prevent the licking for now, but that usually isn't too successful. She should probably be on antibiotics until this has healed up. Once the doctor has evaluated her, he may suggest the foot be bandaged. Otherwise, leaving the foot open with a cone collar would be the other option which will allow you to be able to clean it and apply topical medication. You may want to ask your vet about dramamine or bonine for the car sickness. If he says it is ok, it may make the car ride a bit more tolerable. Best of luck to you and let me know if I can assist you further.

Reply to michele's Post: Can you tell me are these things like little sqishy fluid filled kind of sacks that are soft and right between the toe or on top between the toe? They don't bleed when broken just kinda oozy. I saw an old one between the toe that seems to be coming back and this new one on top of yet between her toes both on the same paw. She has only had these 2

Thanks, Michele

Yes, a cyst is a fluid filled sac. They can open and ooze and are usually between the toes, hence their name. They do often return, even if you decide on surgical removal which is an option. With this condition, there is usually an underlying problem such as an infection and allergies. You may want to consider trying a hypo-allergenic food such as Hills prescription Z/D. However, your pet can still have allergies to anything. Some pets are allergic to certain foods such as beef, pork, wheat etc. They can also have enviornmental allergies as well. Try the switch to the hypo allergenic food as well as a course of antibiotics to see if this will help. Another thing to consider is a thyroid problem which can be identified through a blood test.
