I have a 4 mth old pomeranian and I don't think he's a purebreed pom. His tail hooks over his back but it's not featherd and he has about inch long hair but it lays flat on his back around his neck it fluffs out but not much Is this just his ugly duckling phase or have I been had p.s I purchased him form a puppy store in the mall that says purebreed puppies only are sold also his sire and dam is aca registered but that doesn't mean much. Is there anyway to tell???

Relist: I still need help.
I would like to know if the soft coat come in first or the long hairs and if the soft coat comes under that to stand up the long hairs because my dog has long hairs but very few of them are standing up most is lying flat

ACCEPTED Check Mark

My experience with coat growth is that the undercoat comes in first and the guard hairs grow out beyond it afterwards.
I think your dog probably just didn't get the heavy coat it should have inherited.
He's young for it but it might be alopecia

Pom pups do go through a coat change stage but usually you see the soft undercoat coming in pushing out the silky puppy coat.
This might be due to a thyroid problem. You could have your vet check for that.
