Hi , I have a 14 year old dalmation who has been in good health. Over the last few days he has started to act a little strange. He has been winning and barking throughout the day and night. He also looks like he is getting some sort of hives all over his body. What do you think it is and what should i do? Bruce

Reply to Gina's Post: He is eating and drinking just fine.He is mostly an inside dog we live in a small city (12,000 people)He has not gone into any wood recently.I dont't think the fleas or ticks are out yet. We live in the northeast and we are just getting warmer weather.

I am in NY State and the fleas have arrived. Give him the once over, many dogs, especially dalmations who are noted for sensitive skin. He may have flea dermatitis (flea allergy) He may also be having a reaction to his dog food. Dogs can become allergic to specific ingredients like corn and beef or wheat even if fed the same food all their lives. :) I would go ahead and give your vet a call regarding this before it gets worse. He may need to be put on a sensitive system dog food. You can give him benedryl to help with the allergy. 1-2 mg per pound of body weight every 8 hours. This will calm the allergy and calm him a bit too :) Let me know if I can help you further :) Check out this site about allergies :)

He had a raw spot on it and was bleeding a little bit.He was eating his own stool two days ago. Also maybe duck stool the other day when we walk him down by the river.I will keep you informed. thank you for youe help. Bruce

Bruce: I am glad that he is stable today :) Keep me posted on how he is doing. The benedryl will help him with the itchiness. Just a FYI, dogs eat their own stool because it tastes good to them. It is full of undigested food that has a lot of flavor..atleast to them :) Keep an eye on him with the duck stool as that can make him sick.

Good luck and Have a wonderful Holiday :)
