Question

pancreatitis in maltese 10 yrs. old

Sent to Pet Experts April 07, 2006 1:17 p.m.

My 10 year old Maltese suffered from pancreatitis this past tuesday night. he was whimpering and was very sensitive to touch under his belly. In addition, he drank alot of water and threw up twice; I rushed him to the ER overnight. They told me his amylase and lipase levels were off the chart. I had to leave him overnight hooked to an IV until the following morning where I took him to his own Vet Hospital. Today is Friday, and he has been there since Wednesday morning. Last night after 48 hours, they tried giving him a bit of crushed ice, in which several hours later he threw up again. At the same time, they took blood form him yesterday and said his enzyme and white blood cell levels have dropped significantly and he is more alert and wagging his tail. I am afraid though because he wasn't able to keep down the water. I asked the vets if they thought this will be fatal in which they doubt because of his improved blood test results. They said they will try administering water again tonight to see if he can keep it down. How normal is it after resting the pancreas for a dog to throw up again after taking in some water? This is the first time my dog has suffered form pancreatitis and I am very sad and afraid for his life. I also asked for an ultrasound to be adminsitered in which they said because his enzyme levels have dropped most probably is not necessary. If the enzyme levels have dropped significantly why then can he not hold down water? The vets also told me that this can be a long process sometimes over a week before they can take any food again. I am hopeful that my dog will recover, but I am worried about complications after, although the vets have not discussed this with me. How likely is is that he will relapse and produce the same outcomes, and what are the percentages of dogs who do recover? Also, please give me ay advice about after care for my dog. Finally, I have observed my dog everyday since he became sick and he definetly is alert, barking and wagging his tail in adition the vets say he is less sensitive to touch under his belly which is also a good sign. Does the fact that he threw up the water setting him back on his progress and improvement?
Thank you,
Leila
