Question

Sent to Pet Experts March 22, 2006 6:47 p.m.

I have a 4 year old Chocolate Lab. Over the past several months he has become very itchy. My vet has given him several repeated doses of antibiotic-(said it was a bacterial skin infection)...this has been accompanied by steriod useage as well. The rash appears mostly on his underquarters, and there are no fleas present. He seems to be better when on the steriods, but once the script is gone, he is back to itching. He has always eaten the feces of my other Chocolate Lab.....could this have caused an infection that is then coming out as a rash? He also appears much thinner, and has now been losing his fur. We have an appointment-again-for a blood test on Friday. I am at the point of changing vets, as I think we are not getting anywhere. Your input is appreciated.

Optional Information:
Age: 3; Male; Breed: chocolate labrador

Already Tried:
antibiotic & prednisone

Did your vet do a skin scraping?

Is the other lab showing any of the same symptoms?

What are you feeding him?

the other lab started to itch a bit, but no rash, and no loss of fur or weight. We have always fed them Purina lamb & rice. And, no, my vet did not do a skin scraping-my husband doesnt think so at least!

OK...if it is a bacterial infection, it is usually a secondary problem caused by an allergy, hormone disorder or possibly a parasite like fleas. I would check him carefully for fleas and discuss a diet change with your vet. You can talk to him about the use of holistic dog foods like Eagle Pack. You may also request that he does do a skin biopsy or allergy tests. There are also medicated shampoos that contain benzoyl peroxide that are helpful. Even with the proper antibiotic treatment, it could take over a month to clear the symptoms up. If you are not comfortable with this vet, by all means get a second opinion so you dog will more comfortable faster. You can also discuss the use of benedryl to give him some relief while he is not on the steriods. I would think, honestly, that it is either an allergic reaction to flea bites or from a food allergy. Hope this helps :) and good luck to your boy :) Let me know if you have any other questions :)

Is there like a Claritin for dogs? Wouldnt Benedryl make him sleepy? For a 70 pound dog what would the doseage be? Do they make doggy allergy shots?

Benedryl might make him a little less active, but not a lot. You can talk to your vet about the use of chlorphenirmine (which might make him more drowsy than the benedryl actually). If it is a flea allergy, he needs to be treated with Advantage or Frontline to help keep the fleas off of him...if it is a food allergy, a simple change of diet will help. Benedryl will help the itching stop, but will not solve the problem. If his eyes were runny along with his nose, I would think environmental allergy like pollen, but it is just his skin which is what is making me think flea or food. Does that make sense?

He is on frontline, we have tried changing his food-(it has been going on that long-we changed to a different purina food)-soon he goes to Maine for the summer-hopefully, this change will give him enough time for this mess to clear up-...so, blood tests, and I will ask for a skin scraping, (we already have a new shampoo from the vet we have been using), we have even taken our rugs out of the house to leave bare wood floors-...he is the one suffering-poor guy. We are not quitters though-next thing is bottled water instead of our well water! Thanks for your input-

You are very welcome and thank you for the accept and the bonus...very nice of you and very appreicated :) I wish you all the luck and it is so good to see such caring pet owners :) Try an Eagle Pack blend..there are many to choose from...you want to stay away from anything that contains corn. Keep me post on how he is doing :)

This can usually be purchased at any pet super store like Pet Supplies Plus. Here is their website...you can study the different blends available for specific needs here too. On the left side there is a column that says "where to buy" or "local retailers". Put in your info and it should list suppliers in your area. :)
