I have a 10 y/o n/male & 4 y/o s/female recently I adopted an abandoned 6 m/o female kitten. The 10 y/o has quit meowing as a matter of fact I notice that he is now having trouble swallowing, as if his throat was sore but he appears to be eating and drinking well. The new arrival was vet checked and given a clean bill of health before I brought her home.

Reply to Terri Riba's Post: Gracie (newcomer) has been with me approx 2 weeks, Smokey (10 y/o) not to thrilled but he's always been exposed to different cats of various ages @ different times. Izzy (4 y/o) not completely warm to her but tolerates her natural female reaction I think.

Dear friend,
Cats carry upper respiratory virus on their fur and even though they appear healthy and symptomless they CAN infect other cats with a URI.
Keep a sharp eye on Smokey for any developing symptoms. I am concerned that at 10, his immune system might not be strong enough to fight this off and he might require an antibiotic.

If Smokey has any stress related to Gracie, that could weaken his immune system as well.
Males can have territorial issues, where females can take a more "whatever" attitude.
Of course there are females that can be little witches. That is where they got the term "catty" and why it is almost never used to discribe a man!
It sounds as though things are going pretty well and your cats have made the adjustment so I would just keep an eye on Smokey.
Beat wishes,
Terri

Reply to Terri Riba's Post: Terri, Thank you for your prompt response. I have already made an appointment to have him seen tomorrow morning. Our Doctor thinks that it weird that he has quit "speaking" to me as well. Smokey is a very vocal cat and this situ is NOT normal for him. Thank You again.........
