my great dane pharo is 9 yrs old and suffers from arthritis. He has been on rimadyl for awhile and it seems to help alittle. He also has some incontinence and is on metronidazole as well as thyroid medicine. I want to take him off rimadyl and put him on something more natural. My vet gave me standard process musculoskeletal support but how will that help with the pain? What about next step canine liquid glucosimine - can you suggest something that i can give him the rest of his life that won't harm him in other areas like rimadyl can.

Optional Information:
Age: 9; Male; Breed: great dane

The best pain meds are the ones like metacam, deramaxx, rimadyl.
It sounds like he might have some spinal arthritis (stool incontinance often goes with that) and mostly the glucosamine supplements do not help with spinal issues.
I've used liquid glucosamine such as Adequan shots.
You could see if glycoflex or cosequin help him.
But I think the stuff your vet gave you is about the same thing.
You might find accupuncture will help him with his pain. A holistic vet might be able to suggest other supplements too. This site may help you find one to work with on these choices

Hope this helps you!
