I have a an old english sheepdog. He is four and a half months old. He has been diagnosed wtih demedectic mange. My vet said we could put him on a medication that costs $400 a month for 3 months $1200 total with no guarantee this will work. The other alternative is the dip. Four dips minimum I know this is a powerful chemical and can cause side effects. Somebody told me about a home remedy and would like to run it by you to see if it works. Combining equal amounts of pinesol and shampoo with conditioner together. Bathe 3 times a week for couple of weeks. Will this work.

Optional Information:
Age: 2; Male; Breed: Old English Sheepdog

Already Tried:
He has only been on anti bioctics for the sores that developed.

Demodectic mange will often clear up on its own without any treatment at all. Making almost any treatment appear successful at times. This is why most vets recommend not treating this form of mange at all unless it becomes generalized. (affects more then five or six spots on the body). If it does become generalized, there is no effective home remedy known.

There are several ways to treat mange. If this is demodectic mange (non contagious) you can read about how to cope with it here

If its sarcoptic or contagious mange you can read about it here

Ivermectin is pretty inexpensive to use and I think the vet may have been quoting you prices to use Milbemycin on this size dog.
If Ivermectin is not contraindicated in OES then you might consider that.
Even though demodex can resolve on its own most vets advise treatment to speed recovery and to keep the dog more comfortable.
Your home remedy is both toxic and dangerous. http://www.petcaretips.net/pet_poisoning.html
Better to use a known chemical that actually works and has a known dosage amount etc.
Hope this helps you!
